Tudor Glass - Measuring for a portrait glass and oval shape frames
With most of the old portrait or oval glass available
With the broken pieces taped up to give the full shape, place onto white or brown paper and trace tightly with pen or pencil all round.
Mark the tracing “Please cut glass just inside this line” or similar. Note
approx depth desired.
You can also use the portrait or item, even the backing board itself, provided they are a
good fit with suitable clearance from the frame tight edge (usually clearance of
3mm to 4mm or 1/8" to 5/32" is sufficient).
Without glass
Place frame with rebate down onto white or brown paper. Ensure this is on a firm
surface and with a pen or pencil at an angle to get into the very edge of the
rebate, trace all round.
Ensure tracing is at the very outside of the rebate edge, and is as neat as
possible.
Mark where you would like glass to be cut in relation to the line, “Please cut glass just inside this line” for example.
Note approx depth desired.

ALTERNATIVE METHOD - If you have trouble getting a pen or pencil under the
rebate lip enough, try this.
* Turn the frame rebate side up, place a sheet of oversize white or brown
paper on top,
(a good thick paper is preferable).
* Press around the frame outer rebate corner to leave an indent on the paper,
careful not to move it while running around with your
fingers.
* Carefully go over the pressed line with a pen to leave a neat line,
mark for the glass to be cut just inside line for clearance.
Note approx depth required.
